You will quickly see that we are no ordinary bus and coach operator!

Wheels/Midland Red Coaches is a specialist organisation operating a range of traditional and stylish vintage buses and classic coaches to suit most occasions. WHEELS / Midland Red Coaches  is based in the central Midlands and operates over an approximate fifty mile radius of Hinckley, Nuneaton, Coventry and Rugby areas.  We obviously make some exceptions to this according to specific itineraries, but we do have to limit the mileages of our classic coaches to ensure that they have a long retirement. We travel anywhere in the UK for TV and Film work which we wish to be involved in.  For all work, we cover areas of the midlands including Hinckley, Leicester, Coventry, Bedworth,  Nuneaton, Leamington Spa, Warwick, Kenilworth, Stratford upon Avon, Coleshill and North Warwickshire, Tamworth, Lichfield, Birmingham, and  in fact most of the East Midlands and West Midlands area.

Our vehicles are suitable for most occasions: a stylish Wedding with white ribbons and flowers, an important product launch, a trip to the zoo, a Stately Home, or a day at the local races watching the horses from the elevated position of our open sided Charabanc or from the top of one of our double deckers;  a simple transfer to the airport, or the transport for an entire conference. Recapture those lazy afternoons on a nostalgic Mystery Tour, or we could be simply providing vehicles for important railway replacement services during the rebuilding of our railway network. We can provide buses for Television and Film makers - our patient and uniformed Drivers and crews are used to long or difficult shoots - and interesting buses for transport rallies or carnivals or village fates. We can even provide transport arrangements for funerals too.  Whether it be a plain and simple journey or whether you need us to organise highly complex arrangements - We've organised the transport for the largest carol service for disabled people with over 3500 visitors to Coventry Cathedral requiring specialist transport.  Every journey is special, and every arrangement deserving the best in care and attention to detail, and organised by professionals with many years of experience in the business.

We also offer amazing Bus Driver Experience Days, where you can arrange to come and Drive a Classic Bus and spend a day at our 1950's style Midland Red Bus Driver Training School. This is also good for groups and Corporate Days and Team Building, and these group and corporate days can be specially organised at a time to suit.

Although the bus and coach interests of WHEELS / Midland Red Coaches go back a long way, our staff themselves have even more years of experience with some of the biggest and best companies in the people-moving industry.  So often today, in all types of business, people with little or no product knowledge and precious little experience offer you second rate service.  Wheels / Midland Red Coaches staff have practical skills and an in-depth knowledge gained from years of hands-on experience, to give you confidence and peace of mind.  In preparation for the Midland Red Centenary and in view of our past connections with the Company and its successors we were successful in buying the Midland Red Coaches company and name, and subsequently having three vehicle types in our care which operated for Midland Red including our famous D9 double decker and a unique charabanc  with origins dating from 1929.  2006 brought another cause for celebration when our famous  BMMO D9 had its 40th Birthday Party.

Today we have both ancient and modern looking classic vehicles to suit most Private Hire events, Weddings, Funerals, Extended Tours, Holidays and Day Trips out, and of course our famous Bus Driver Experience Days where you can come along and learn the basics of driving British made classic Buses and Coaches.

Our Midland Red history talks are very popular with meeting groups and organisations and as after dinner entertainment.

Midland Red - Bigger than you ever imaged!   With over one hundred years of public transport tradition, social history, vehicle engineering, development and manufacture, and a big employer - it's a fascinating story.  We can organise these talks for afternoon or evening meetings or as an after-dinner attraction.    Contact us for talks at:  buses@wheels.co.uk

New Excursions Announced for 2012

This new season has the old favourites like Boundary Mills and Melton Mowbray Pork Pie and Markets and a trip to Banbury, but there are some great new trips, like DOWNTON ABBEY and LARK RISE TO CANDLEFORD country.

And there's the downright unusual too!  A VIP trip to the JBC factory.  Yes, it's true,  we are off to see the story of this Great British market leader. You probably know them for their big bright yellow excavators, but they are much more than that.  It's a family tradition, a £5m exhibition and includes a Two Course Lunch on arrival too.

We have a Snowdrop Tour in February, Waterways and Windmills Tour in March, Blossom Tour in April, and a 1920's Charabanc Trip in late April calling at the lovely Astley Book Farm. And there's a special trip in May to "The Story of Silk - from Cocoon to Catwalk" - that one's up in Macclesfield. We visit the peaceful War Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas including a trip into Lichfield, then in June there's an interesting trip to The Waterways Festival at the Crick Boat Show - all about our flourishing waterways leisure network.

Finally in June - for the brave - we have a long distance 1920's Charabanc Trip to a very special destination - for a conducted tour of the famous Morgan Motor Works in Malvern Link. This tour will also have time for a look around Great Malvern too - some fantastic views and fresh air.
After the long journey in the Chara, we are sure that you will be pleased to return home in one of our more modern coaches - with windows !!
See the Excursions page for more details.

Now - An "Ambush" of Tigers.

The latest addition to our varied fleet of British designed and built buses and coaches is another modern classic - it now enables larger groups to hire two identical coaches, and while our unique 25-seat Charabanc sits right at the start of the heyday of British coaching, our modern looking  Leyland Royal Tiger Doyen vehicles represent the last model from the famous Leyland stable and a true British classic.

Leyland named most of their commercial models after large animals, and many of their coaches were named after big cats!   Usually on-board is our five foot long Tiger model, complete with  crown to signify the coach's model name: The Leyland 'Royal' Tiger.

You can read all about it on our Latest News page.

Christmas Cards from Midland Red   -  GREETINGS TO YOU ALL

Our Midland Red Christmas Cards are again available.  The cards are available from us direct via our Online Shop or by post, and are available in packs of 5 cards.

The card is large format A5 size and has "Seasons Greetings" on the front, which is repeated as a message on the inside of the card.

Taken from an original oil painting commissioned by Midland Red Coaches, it depicts a traditional and nostalgic British Christmas time scene. It shows traditional red buses from our own classic bus fleet standing outside a snow-covered hostelry, the style of which was typical of those used by the original Midland Red company on their famous Coach Cruise holidays. The scene is completed by the snow capped Royal Mail postbox and the iconic British GPO telephone box.

A Pack of 5 cards are £4.79 plus 0.98p p&p.

You can buy these on our Online Shop, or by post from Midland Red Coaches (postal office), 23 Broad Street, Brinklow, Warwickshire. CV23 0LS.

BUS ADVERTISING - a novel way to get noticed !

Advertising on buses is a great medium for promoting your brand, business, or product.  However, advertising on a classic Midland Red double decker bus has not only the benefit of giving you a totally flexible package, but getting your advert in many photographs and being seen by most people wherever the buses go!

Nearly everyone notices a classic bus, and in our case a lot of people have a nostalgic feeling for the old Midland Red, giving your advert prime position.

Wherever the bus goes, so does your advert.  The images above give some examples, Pic 1 was taken in Atherstone, Pic 2 was taken in Sileby, Pic 3 was taken in Malvern.  If you have a promotions day, your advert and bus can be on hand to strengthen your image and brand, can be used in the actual product launch, and can bring in special clients/visitors - in fact it's an incredibly versatile and flexible way to advertise.

Steve Knight of Steven Knight Photography offered a sponsorship deal for the Midland Red D9 to hold adverts that hadn't been seen for over 30 years. Besides using the bus for special tours and enthusiast trips, recreating the past also presents an opportunity for the buses to be used in Film and Television recreations.

Most of our vehicles are able to be used for promotions. Our classic WHEELS Pioneer coach was used recently by a TV company, and as a studio for interviewing pop groups while out on location. Branding on the external windows was used for promoting Fred Perry clothing.  A red double decker is a good choice for promoting "Summer Holiday" and three theatre and amateur dramatic groups have taken advertising on the bus and used the bus for photoshoots for promoting ticket sales.

Your bus advertising can be tailored to your exact requirements and the bus can be taken to any suitable Midlands location to promote your product periodically during the term of your advertising.

PROMS 2012 - It's now time to start booking your PROM by Midland Red Charabanc

Well, not just our Charabanc, but that vehicle is usually in highest demand.  Here are some of our recent Prom events - they are certainly all special and make for a unique photo opportunity.  We do limit the mileages on some of our vehicles, so do email your enquiries to us so that we can see your requirements.  The information we need for costing your prom run is:  the start address (where everyone will be getting on), and probably the location for your photoshoot with everyone in their fine dress;  the address of the Prom event;  and the time you wish to arrive at the Prom.

We normally arrive at the start address an hour prior to the Prom start.  This gives time for photographs, a ride around on the way to the Prom, and then more photographs if you require them at the Prom on arrival.

Arriving by WHEELS/ Midland Red bus always attracts attention and is the greatest way to get noticed.  It's a smart way to travel !

Midland Red D9 gets a new coat of paint

Our famous Midland Red D9 double decker bus is now just forty six years old and was last painted in 1999. Whilst the old paint was still shiny, there were areas including the roof which needed attention.  The opportunity came along when Steve Knight of Steven Knight Photography offered a sponsorship deal for the D9 to be given a livery not seen for nearly thirty years - still a red bus, but now with decals from the late 1960's period and currently the only one currently running with this style of livery.

A date was chosen when there was a long enough period without a diary booking for this specific vehicle.   As this is our most popular bus, it was decided to combine the MOT preparation time and paintshop time to make best use of available time. A slot was found with BusCare Warwicks for the application of the paint. Original fleetname, numbers and legal lettering decals were then applied by a contractor for Midland Red Coaches. Then the MOT test followed - and everything worked  to plan.  The bus had the benefit of engineering care by Marco Serafini our Engineer and Anthony Parsons his assistant. Although Anthony is too young to remember D9's in service, he really enjoyed working on 5415 and proudly took it for its MOT test. Marco, himself a vehicle enthusiast and classic car specialist is an ex Midland Red employee.

To celebrate its new and fresh look, a special excursion was arranged covering some old Midland Red routes which were regularly run by D9's. The Excursion ran on Sunday 8th May and operated in conjunction with Steven Knight Photography.  5415 our D9 started in Hinckley on the old 658 Leicester to Coventry service and ran via Nuneaton and Bedworth.  On arrival in Coventry the service changed to 518 Coventry To Stratford upon Avon.  A leisurely journey with photo opportunities en-route ran via Kenilworth, Leamington Spa, Warwick, Barford, Wellesbourne, Charlecote, and Stratford.  The bus was met in Stratford by J.P. Addenbrook, ex Eastern area Divisional Manager of Midland Red from the 1960's and 70's era.  The bus returned via  the old Midland Red 590 and 658 services.

To mark this special occasion and the repainting of the D9, Steven Knight Photography has  produced a limited edition souvenir Guidebook of the day. This 28 page publication has an array of colour pictures covering the whole day, and includes a section of internal shots showing many of the passengers on board this special excursion.  This new souvenir book is available directly from Steven Knight Photography and is priced at £7.95

Midland Red Coaches operate the West Midlands Show Shuttle

Midland Red vehicles were seen around Shrewsbury in May, for the first time in nearly 15 years when a BMMO D9 and Leyland Leopard coach were used to operate between Shrewsbury town centre and the Showground for the weekend.  Midland Red's successor Arriva plan a move to new premises shortly and the old traditional bus garage will be lost, so a great opportunity was taken to see what will possibly be the last BMMO (Midland Red) made bus in the depot along with the latest Arriva vehicle peering from the original garage doorways. Thanks to Arriva management and staff for making this photograph possible!

Charabanc leads Birmingham Pride event

Our Midland Red Charabanc was the lead vehicle to parade the streets of our second city, through the Birmingham Pride street parade on Saturday 28th May.

Dignitarys included Birmingham's own Clare Short and the MP for Birmingham Yardley in a full bus of Patrons and VIP visitors. Following a send off from the Lord Mayor, the Charabanc lead the carnival of nearly 20 other decorated floats. Thousands of onlookers watched from the entire length of the spectacular 90 minute parade which ended in Hurst Street where a two day festival of music and events was underway.  It's an important event in Birmingham's calendar and worth around £10m to the city's economy.

George Eliot Tour by Midland Red Charabanc

In May our unique Charabanc operated another of John Burton's special George Eliot Tours in Nuneaton.  These are fully inclusive all-day tours as part of a weekend spent soaking up the heritage, nostalgia and readings of this famous local novelist.  The George Eliot Fellowship host a number of these tours which starts from Griff House the former home of Mary Ann Evans (George Eliot), and visits locations from her novels such as Red Deeps, Astley Church, Arbury Hall, South Farm, and Coton Church.  A visit to nearby Astley Book Farm provided a welcome coffee break with time to view some of the thousands of books available. An excellent buffet lunch was arranged in the Astley Reading Room, an old building provided in 1914 by the Newdigate family for the improvement in education of local people.

The Charabanc provided an exciting vehicle to visit locations on this tour which started around 10.30am and ended around 6.30pm.

If you would like to have a private George Eliot tour for your group, complete with expert on board guide, please email us: buses@wheels.co.uk.

Co-Op Promotion with Midland Red

In May, our Booking Agents in Bedworth "CoOp Travel",  hosted a Coaching event at their Bedworth CoOp store to promote Coach Holidays and  Coach Day Trips.   Midland Red Coaches took along the Leyland Royal Tiger Doyen to display in the pedestrian area.

Daytrips for 2012 from  Midland Red  -  dates now online.

See our Excursions page for more details and a downloadable brochure.

The WHEELS fleet of buses and coaches is picked  from a fine pedigree of traditional British names - Leyland, BMMO, Bristol,  AEC. These were once the foundation of the British bus and coach industry.  Well engineered, rugged and reliable, most were the classic British heavyweight designs.  In fact all our fleet is of British design and manufacture !  Not many companies can say that these days !

It goes without saying that our fleet is well maintained, and that our vehicles are driven by properly licenced, experienced and smartly uniformed drivers, and our vehicles are correctly insured for operating for hire.  Our vehicles also carry the blue operators' licence disc in the windscreen in addition to the normal tax disc.  It has been known for some vintage bus owners to hire out their vehicles without an operators' licence and without correct insurance which puts their unsuspecting passengers at serious risk.

What do you know about The Midland Red?  We can talk to your Group.

Midland Red was once the largest bus company in the country outside of London.  Midland Red not only operated buses over a large area of the country, but they both designed and built their own vehicles. They were always the talk of the other manufacturers as the Midland Red designs were so advanced.

They were also a very large employer, and had a big family feel, with a wide social side with inter-garage events. The  manufacturing plant in Birmingham was one of the most advanced in Europe.   The once vast Midland Red is no more, and what is left is a shadow of its former self.  But what happened?  Why was it called "Midland Red"?  Why didn't it buy buses instead of making its own ?

If you are part of a regular meeting group who have, or would like, day trips out, and need a speaker for your guests, Midland Red Coaches can help.  We can  arrange for Ashley, one of our senior team to speak to your meeting. The talk is suited to any type of group as it can be tailored to your audience.  A small charge is made depending upon the location etc.

Get in touch with us to make further enquiries.   Email us at  buses@wheels.co.uk or call Ashley on 077 3388 4914

Womens Institute celebrate their 90 years with a period Charabanc Ride and Afternoon Tea.

Probably the best dressed "costumed" Charabanc group we have taken out!  The driver gave a short history talk about Midland Red on arrival.

Newbold Pacey and Ashorne Womens Institute celebrated their 90th Birthday in July and enjoyed a ride around South Warwickshire including Warwick and Royal Leamington Spa.  Those not lucky enough to be on board waved and grasped for their phone cameras to catch the moment as we went along the Parade in Leamington Spa.

Then it was back to Ashorne for the four eldest members to lead the party between WI base and Ashorne Hall in a horse and trap for Afternoon Tea.  Then after cucumber sandwiches and special WI celebration cake it was back on the Chara for a ride back to the village.

Ashorne Hall was once the family home of Colonel May of matches fame (Bryant and May) and was later commandeered during the war years and after, and is now the training centre for what was once British Steel (Corus).

An extract of a letter from the WI who hired the bus:

 Hi,

On behalf of Newbold Pacey and Ashorne WI, I would like to thank you for giving us such a splendid afternoon out.

Everyone enjoyed the informative talk on this history of Midland Red, and the interesting information you gave to us as we rode around Warwick and Leamington.  The smiles on peoples faces when they saw the Charabanc was wonderful to behold.

This will be the highlight of your year, and will be talked about for many months to come.

Yours sincerely,

SB.

Midland Red Coaches help promote local Tourism

Midland Red Coaches are "local" to most areas in the Midlands, but as our customers know, we always try to visit places not instantly recognisable as tourism destinations yet have lots to offer - none more than North Warwickshire and surrounding areas. WHEELS Midland Red Coaches are members of Northern Warwickshire Tourism Association which is an independant organisation made up of lots of small businesses promoting the area to both locals and visitors - and always coming up with something new!

Recently our Double Decker D9 did a scenic and guided tour of Nuneaton and Bedworth - not your usual tourist hotspots, yet enthralling all those on board with an expert guide John Burton, giving lots of unknown facts about this area and its famous people including George Eliot. On board were some NWTA members and Mayors of Nuneaton and Bedworth and North Warwickshire.

Welcome  to  2009 - Spring is Here !

We have had an interesting Winter Season.  December was busier than usual. We operated some trips to drive through the festive lights of various Midlands towns which went rather well, and our Day Trips were all busy especially those favourites like Worcester and Ludlow which are now very popular annual events.

Our Midland Red Travel Club is going from strength to strength with some customers buying Membership for their friends as part of their Christmas Present - a great and useful idea.

We have been visiting some Groups and Residential Homes  in our operating area, giving talks on the Midland Red and our Travel Club; a small fee is levied and subsequently groups which join our Club have  the fee deducted from the first of any coach hire charge plus pick ups at the door!

Our 2009 Day Trip leaflet has the information on prices which Travel Club members pay, and there are lots of great discounts on most of our  trips.  You can print off your own copy from the excursions and events page by clicking the highlighted link above.

077 3388 4914 - This number gets directly to us, but if we are engaged or with clients, you will be able to leave a message and we can return your call, but please leave your name, number and more importantly a message so that we can get back to you with some accurate information.  You can Book Day Trips, Private Hire etc by telephone and pay by Card, or by Cheque just as normal.   We look forward to hearing from you.

There were more Winter Weddings than usual too - in locations including Coleshill, Birmingham, and Berkeswell,  as well as some Corporate Private Hire bookings - some as far afield as Cambridge.

Then 2009 introduced itself with the weather we thankfully only get every eighteen or twenty years. But unlike London's red buses, our Midland Red classics carried on serving our customers.

See some of our winter work in pictures below

Angie's 70th Birthday event was set in the Derbyshire countryside just outside Ashbourne. Passengers braved the frosty day for a 1920's style Charabanc ride, picking up the Birthday Girl on the way for a celebration meal Janis (in the yellow top) and friends set off from home to take a vintage Midland Red D9 bus ride into Worcester for a special Sunday Lunch with wonderful food and a surprise when one of the diners took the microphone and gave a singing rendition to complete the event. The classic Bristol RE coach and our red D9 double decker were far away from home in Cambridge on a Corporate Hire performed for a London company.  The lunch was held in a University Hall, with guest speaker Michael Portillo.

On the Left:     A D9 in the heart of Worcester on a sleety afternoon taking guests and friends of the Birthday Girl out for a very special Sunday Lunch Bash.
On the Right:   An S23 temporarily parked in our car park at our depot and making a seasonal postcard picture.

Midland Red continued to operate in the snow...

These were really tough conditions - snow covering the entire front of the bus with the driver having to get out regularly and clean snow from the windscreen.

An extract of a letter from the Customer who hired the bus:

 Hi,

Just wanted to drop you a little note, to thank you for making yesterday such a brilliant day for us and all our friends.

I think everyone will remember their trip on the big red bus for a very long time to come, especially with the snow on the way back.

Glad to hear that you got back safely, and would look forward to being able to use the bus again one day soon.

Regards R&J

Great Fun on our "Limited Edition" Charabanc Outings

After many requests, this year we included a small number of our 2008 Day Trips using our open-sided unique Charabanc.  These were a great success and we have decided to make these tours a feature of our future programmes.

The South Warwickshire Countryside Tour will feature the Charabanc in future. This leisurely tour visits such places as Stoneleigh Abbey, Kenilworth, Royal Leamington Spa, Warwick, then travels eastwards via Offchurch, and then on the Roman Fosse Way to Hunningham Hill where we make a stop at Hill Top Farm. This is a farm with a countryside shop, selling all manner of locally produced food, including a great selection of breads, fresh meat and vegetable produce, pickles and chutneys.  Further inside you will discover their Eatery - the quality of food here is excellent, and is fresh from the farm-shop next door! You will find a range of hot and cold dishes, and the sandwiches are a meal in themselves too! Then from here it's back home via a ride around the country lanes.

THIS TOUR CAN ALSO BE ARRANGED FOR PRIVATE GROUPS using the Charabanc or any of our other classic vehicles.  The route may vary depending on your place of origin. Please email us to discuss details.

We are here for all your Midland Red Coaches Bus and Coach Hire enquiries and bookings, Day Trips out, Wedding Transport, Weekend Breaks, Turkey & Tinsel, traditional Coach Cruise Holidays by GrandUK, Wheelchair Access Coach, Classic Funeral Transport. And for Group Organisers  - we can make your life easier and  your group members'  day out enjoyable. Get in touch - by email us - buses@wheels.co.uk  or by calling  02476 633624

Charabanc Summoned to Lichfield Cathedral

Special permission was granted to our Charabanc to park in the main entrance of Lichfield's beautiful Cathedral.  It was for a outing to celebrate a special birthday of the Arch Deacon of the Cathedral.

After picking up in The Close, unsuspecting family members were waiting at the outlying bus stops en-route, unaware that our unique Charabanc was coming to pick them up. At each bus stop the passengers were welcomed aboard and were shocked to see their head of family sitting happily on the front seat!

When the Arch Deacon was in his late teens he worked for a coach company in northern Staffordshire, so was able to tell the Driver some tales of how it was in the Good Old Days.

First stop was Trentham Gardens for Lunch, followed by a ride around some old haunts, then it was on to Shugborough Hall for Afternoon Tea.

It really was a splendid day - and perfect Charabanc weather was ordered too.  How could He refuse?

We operate various Tours and Day Trips to Lichfield - a perfect opportunity to visit the Cathedral. This tour  (and similar tours) can also be arranged for Private Groups, using the Charabanc or any of our other classic vehicles.  The route may vary depending on your place of origin. Please discuss this with us.
